Interview Tip of the Month: Do This, Not That:
How To Keep From Interrupting Your Interviewer |
"Oh, I -- er, um no -- you go ahead -- I'm sorry." Ever cut your interviewer off? It's so awkward...and it's preventable! Here are a few tips to keep yourself from stepping on that employer's toes:
- Give them your full attention. Instead of mentally planning your response while the interviewer is talking, practice active listening (you can't interrupt when your mouth is closed, and your ears are truly open).
- Take notes. If you're dying to speak and afraid you might lose your train of thought, jot a note -- so you can come back to it when it's your turn to speak.
- Try raising your pointer finger. This provides a visual cue to the interviewer that you'd like to say something.
